Built to a design by Canadian company MAFCOhouse, this home is inspired by the Modernist ideal of the mid-twentieth century and the Case Study Houses of Los Angeles, USA. Its flat roof is unusual for these northern climes but a sturdy post and beam design is engineered to support the heaviest of snow loads and the wall to wall glazing makes for wonderful views of the lake.
This is the third MAFCOhouse that CDH has framed and the first that we have taken to full completion. A ceiling of thin strip eastern white cedar runs throughout the interior of the building and extends seamlessly to the exterior soffit, blurring the lines between inside and out. This same material clads one wall of the sun room, which is dominated by two large skylights.
Internally, the 1480 sqft home features a master bedroom suite, separated from the rest of the house by a glazed corridor; there's also a second bedroom, office, bathroom and main kitchen/living space. Natural light abounds, thanks to the large banks of glazing along the southern aspect. This entire elevation is shaded by the extended roof, which overhangs four feet to protect the interior from solar ingress and overheating in the warmer months of the year.
The exterior of the house is clad in dark corrugated steel siding, which together with the dark framed windows and black roof, ensure that from a distance the building blends almost completely with its woodland surroundings.
